Five designs in the Sports and Recreation range suit the three sports in this guide:

• Golf: a driver and a ball sitting up on the tee, against fairway green.
• Putting: a putter and ball on the green beside the hole. It also sits in the Father’s Day range.
• Cricket Bat: a bat and a red ball resting on the grass.
• Cricket Stumps: the ball hitting the stumps, a moment every bowler remembers.
• Fishing: a rod bent out over the water at sunset.

The same range also covers basketball, bushwalking, chess, crosswords, darts, pool and soccer, so a fan of more than one game has options.

What goes on the label?

Every design has four parts you fill in when you order:

• To: the recipient’s name, as it should appear on the label.
• Message on label: the main line, such as “Happy 60th” or “Thanks for a great season”.
• Date of occasion: optional, and worth adding for a milestone.
• From: who the bottle is from.

The order form also asks whether you’d like the label design emailed to you before printing. Say yes. A misspelled nickname or the wrong year is the one thing that turns a thoughtful gift into an awkward one, and the proof is your chance to catch it.

How do you write a message a sports fan will keep?

Labels are small, so one short line beats a paragraph. The best messages point to something only the recipient will recognise.

• For the golfer: the course they play every Saturday, the hole they finally birdied, or the handicap they talk about at every barbecue.
• For the cricketer: the team, the season and the result. The sample on the Cricket Stumps label reads “Thank you for being a great coach!” with “‘A’ Grade Premiers 2016” underneath, which is close to a perfect template for an end-of-season thank-you.
• For the fisher: the spot they never tell anyone about, or the one that got away. A gentle dig works here, as long as it’s one they’ll laugh at.

If the joke needs explaining, save it for the card and keep the label clean.

Which occasions suit a sports label?

Ordering for a whole team or club

When the bottles are for a club, a committee or a business sponsoring a team, the corporate product list is the place to start. Bottle pricing on the list is based on a minimum order of 12 bottles for the varietal, organic, fortified and spirits ranges. Sparkling has no minimum stated, and the 200 mL mini sparkling bottles have a minimum of 24, which suits a presentation night where every player takes one home.

Want their own photo on the bottle?

Sometimes the best label is the photo of them holding the trophy, the fish or the scorecard. Photo Wines lets you upload your own image, add a name and message, and we’ll email a label proof before printing.

A label is printed small, so choose a close crop with good light. A wide shot of the whole team will shrink each face to almost nothing, while a close shot of one proud angler reads clearly from across the room.

Choosing the wine and the box

Each label goes on a wine you choose from the range: sparkling, whites, reds, and dessert and fortified styles. Match it to the person. If you’re not sure what they drink, ask whoever shares a table with them at the clubhouse.

For presentation, single-bottle gloss boxes come in black, white, silver or red, and the box is also labelled with your personalised label. There are timber boxes with a perspex lid and woodwool for something that looks good on a shelf after the wine is gone.

How long does it take?

Orders are typically ready within 7 to 10 working days from proof approval, with delivery across Australia by courier. The courier time isn’t stated, so allow for it on top. If your date is tighter than that, contact us before you order and we’ll do our best to prioritise it. The count starts when you approve the proof, so reply to the proof email quickly.
